Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
I live in Hokitika. As an adult student at Westland High School I sat School Certificate and Bursary Art. I have exhibited at both Left Bank Gallery and Carnegie Gallery with other artists.
I am a member of Hokitika Art Group and we have over the years held workshops with various NZ Artists; Austen Deans, Sarah Deans, Rob McDowell, Clark Esplin, Yvonne Rust, Els Nordhoff, Paul Van den Burg, Kath Von Tunzelman, to name a few.
I have been a finalist in the local Telecom Art Awards 5 times and received other awards from Hokitika Craft Gallery Co-op, Animal Antics and Wildfoods Festival, also my painting “Ruling the Roost” was voted “viewers’ choice” for the Animal Antics exhibition.
This work is part of a series of paintings based around Arthurs Pass, especially the viaduct as it is such a grand connection to the West Coast and Canterbury.
Having travelled over the Pass many times I have witnessed it in many different moods and atmospheres.
The high hills and jagged landscape suit my painting style and I’ve been working with the ruggedness of the mountain pass and contrasting it with the viaduct.
I’ve enjoyed exploring the subject with colour, clean lines and contrasts. It allows me to simplify everything into abstraction.
During the lockdown I found myself spending a lot more time painting and updating my workbook. At the time it was a great distraction from the unknown outcome of the pandemic.
