Madeleine Thom is a young emerging artist with a passion for creating contemporary oil paintings of figures and landscapes. Madeleine paints to reflect the beauty of nature and to capture the hidden beauty in the world around us. Her work is influenced by her passion for conservation and her love for exploring the backcountry of New Zealand. Her work is strongly inspired by our native birds and local West Coast landscapes.
This is an impressionistic painting of the Waimakariri Valley in Arthur’s Pass, the gateway to the West Coast. I was inspired by this landscape, as it perfectly reflected the rugged and wild nature of the West Coast. I used oil paints to emphasise the vivid colours hidden within the landscape. I also used thick, textured brushstrokes to add dimension and shape to both the image and the painting itself.
The COVID-19 pandemic prevented me from working and gave me an opportunity to focus solely on my art. Though I have been painting recreationally for years, COVID-19 enabled me to make my first sale during lockdown. This has driven me to broaden my painting skillset and continue producing high quality artworks.
