This is an impressionistic painting of the Waimakariri Valley in Arthur’s Pass, the gateway to the West Coast. I was inspired by this landscape, as it perfectly reflected the rugged and wild nature of the West Coast. I used oil paints to emphasise the vivid colours hidden within the landscape. I also used thick, textured brushstrokes to add dimension and shape to both the image and the painting itself.

How I was affected
The COVID-19 pandemic prevented me from working and gave me an opportunity to focus solely on my art. Though I have been painting recreationally for years, COVID-19 enabled me to make my first sale during lockdown. This has driven me to broaden my painting skillset and continue producing high quality artworks.
